DESIGNING CRIME
The Short Life Expectancy and the Workings of a Recent Wave of Credit Card Bank Frauds
* Research Associate, International Centre for Comparative Criminology, University of Montreal
This paper describes a recent wave of credit card bank frauds in Montreal and Toronto. The author takes into account: (a) the family of crimes functionally linked to this particular wave; (b) the organisation of wallet theft and false bank account opening; (c) the market of stolen credit cards and cheques; (d) the internal structure of the "laying paper racket" as Sutherland called it; (e) the precise geographical dynamics and life expectancy of this group event. This analysis has required observer participation in a specific investigation within a specialised police squad and access to all relevant "operational data."
